The Story
Writers' Festival for Cape Breton
The first annual Cabot Trail Writers Festival will open this fall in North River, Cape Breton. The festival will run Friday 2 – Sunday 4 October 2009, on the weekend leading up to Celtic Colours International Festival.
The inaugural lineup of authors includes Newfoundland's Donna Morrissey, author of Kit's Law and What They Wanted, Cape Breton's Douglas Arthur Brown, author of Quintet and Komodo Dragon, and the Cabot Trail's own Susan Zettell, author of The Checkout Girl and Night Watch.
The Cabot Trail Writers Festival will include readings, workshops, a panel discussion with the featured authors moderated by CBC's Steve Sutherland, and a Saturday-night open-stage pub night, when the public is invited to come and tell their stories.
The Festival will feature music in an unusual opening night "Literary Cabaret", with Ms Morrissey's readings sharing the stage with The Poe Trio—guitarist Paul MacDonald, luthier and fiddler Otis Tomas, and bassist Ed Woodsworth. Music will also close the Festival, when author and musician Bill Conall (The Rock in the Water) keeps the story-telling tradition alive in song at the wrap-up Sunday Brunch.
The Cabot Trail Writers Festival is an initiative of the St. Ann's Bay Development Association—SABDA—a registered non-profit community development association (http://sabda.groupenterprise.com/).
The Festival will give visitors one more reason to spend fall in Cape Breton, as we all anticipate Celtic Colours. It's hard to imagine a more inspiring venue in which to read, write, share music, and enjoy each other's company.
The 2009 Festival will be held at the North River Community Hall in North River, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Find details at the Festival web site: cabottrailwritersfestival.com.
